Part One: The Sweet Beginning of a Hallmark Favorite
There is something wonderfully nostalgic about looking back at a Hallmark favorite and realizing just how many different stories they have given us over the years.
For Julie Gonzalo, one of those memorable early stops was Pumpkin Pie Wars, a 2016 Hallmark Channel original that put her right in the middle of a delicious autumn rivalry.
The movie paired Gonzalo with Eric Aragon as Casey McArthy and Sam Harper, the next generation of two families whose long-running bakery rivalry eventually becomes complicated by something neither of them expected: falling in love. Hallmark describes the story as a battle between the two bakeries during a local pumpkin-pie contest, with the supposed rivals discovering that their feelings are becoming much sweeter than the competition. And honestly, what could feel more Hallmark than pumpkin pies, a small-town competition, family history, and two people discovering that perhaps they don’t dislike each other quite as much as they thought?
The image from Pumpkin Pie Wars immediately brings back that cozy seasonal atmosphere. Warm colors fill the screen, pumpkins are everywhere, and the entire movie has the inviting feeling of autumn baking.
But what makes the film especially enjoyable is the way the romance is tied to family.
Casey isn’t simply navigating a relationship. She’s dealing with a legacy that has been passed down to her, expectations surrounding the family business, and the complicated emotions that come with being part of a rivalry that existed long before she entered the picture.
That gives the romance something to work with beyond attraction.
There is history.
There is competition.
There are family expectations.
And there is the possibility of choosing something different.
Gonzalo brings an easy warmth to Casey that makes it natural for viewers to root for her. She has the ability to make a character feel polished without making her inaccessible, and vulnerable without making her helpless.
That balance has become one of the qualities that makes her such a recognizable Hallmark presence.
And looking at her 2016 image beside the 2025 photograph, it’s fascinating to see how much her career has grown while that approachable quality remains.
